Your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the amount of energy your body uses at rest to keep you alive and support essential functions like breathing, circulation, temperature regulation, and cell repair.
RMR testing measures that resting energy expenditure rather than estimating it from an online calculator.
Whether you’re training regularly, working toward a body composition goal, wondering whether you’re eating enough, or simply curious about your metabolism, your measured RMR gives you an individual baseline to work from.
Your results are interpreted by a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and you’ll leave understanding what the numbers actually mean and how they fit into the bigger picture of your activity, training, and goals.
Your RMR is the energy your body uses at rest before we account for exercise and everything else you do throughout the day.
Online calculators predict this using equations based on characteristics such as your age, sex, height, and weight. They can be useful estimates, but they can’t measure your individual physiology.
During an RMR test, the VO₂ Master measures your oxygen consumption and ventilation while you rest. This allows us to calculate your resting energy expenditure and compare it with what an equation would predict for someone with your characteristics.
Your RMR then provides a measured baseline that can be considered alongside your daily activity and training when looking at your overall energy needs.
There are plenty of calculators that will give you a calorie number in about 30 seconds. The problem is that it’s still an estimate.
Measuring your Resting Metabolic Rate can help you:
If you’ve ever wondered whether your metabolism really is “slow,” whether a calorie target actually makes sense for you, or whether under-fuelling may be contributing to fatigue or poor recovery, measuring your RMR gives you an objective baseline to work from.
Your appointment includes:
Your measured RMR and your estimated daily energy needs are two different things. Your RMR is measured during the test. The daily energy expenditure shown in your report is then estimated using your measured RMR and activity level.
Duration: 60 minutes
Investment: $99
You’ll arrive rested and following your pre-test instructions around food, caffeine, and exercise.
During the test, you’ll rest comfortably while breathing normally through the VO₂ Master mask. The system measures your oxygen consumption and ventilation, which are used to calculate your resting energy expenditure.
Once the test is complete, we’ll go through your results together so you understand your measured RMR, how it compares with predicted values, and how it fits into the bigger picture of your daily energy needs.
RMR testing can be useful if you:
You don’t need to be an elite athlete to benefit from knowing your RMR. Sometimes you just want an actual measurement instead of another calculator telling you what your metabolism should be doing.
Not sure if now is the right time to test? Read more about when to get an RMR test.
An RMR test gives you a measured resting energy expenditure. It doesn’t give you a perfect calorie prescription for every day.
Your total energy needs also depend on your exercise, general movement, training volume, and other individual factors.
That’s why I look at your RMR as a baseline rather than a standalone nutrition plan.
Your report includes an estimated total daily energy expenditure and calorie guidance based on the activity level and goal entered into the software. We’ll go through those numbers together and discuss how they should be interpreted in the context of your actual activity and training.
For individual nutrition counselling or meal planning, I recommend working with a Registered Dietitian.
RMR testing can also be brought to your facility for group testing.
